Swiss films since 1896

It’s not that bad

Swiss films? ‘It’s not that bad after all’ or ‘Pas si méchant que ça’ is the title of Claude Goretta’s film from 1975. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting description for a Swiss film, even if Goretta probably meant the protagonist (and back then, Depardieu was still great) and not the Swiss film itself. But this website is about Swiss films. Or rather, about how I indulge in my hobby: collecting films digitally.

Therefore, this blog is not just about films, especially Swiss films, but also about the “why,” “how,” “where,” “what,” and “with what.” For now, the central element will likely be my directory of Swiss films, which I would like to make publicly available on this website.

Anyone who expects to find the films themselves should feel free to click away, because this website or my hobby operates exclusively within a legal framework. All the films I have collected, both online and offline (the good old DVD), are gathered from publicly accessible sources. Furthermore, I have never (and will not in the future) participated in file-sharing networks, even if downloading is not illegal under Swiss law, because these file-sharing networks are based on the fact that films are also uploaded. No way.

I firmly believe that it’s perfectly possible to do without file-sharing platforms. For example, teleboy.ch (where I pay a regular subscription) offers several hundred films per week, and libraries and video rental stores also provide a virtually inexhaustible selection of films. This leads us to the question of how. Collecting the films is unfortunately not that straightforward, and yes, even in 2025, a central Swiss film archive does not exist. That’s why I started collecting and cataloging films a few years ago. And that’s why, after several years of work, this rather extensive directory of Swiss films now exists.

Anyone who has ever wondered in which films Mathias Gnädinger appeared, or who wants to know which films Petra Biondina Volpe directed besides ‘Die göttliche Ordnung’, will find exactly what they are looking for here. A first overview is provided by the complete list (arranged by year, with over 23,000 entries), and those who want to search in more detail can do so using the online database.
